Research culture

We approach science with creativity in experimental design and care in analysis. Ideas, results, and doubts are shared openly, whether at lab meetings, journal clubs, or over coffee. This spirit of working together extends beyond our lab: it has led to several successful collaborations with researchers around the world. We encourage initiative and critical thinking as we tackle difficult questions together. Away from the lab, retreats give us time to deep-dive into our science and the future of the lab, often alongside a walk, a swim, or a pasta-making challenge.

Meetings & Retreats

Interests

Food is a recurring theme in our lab. We swap restaurant recommendations, bring treats to share, discuss lab meetings over breakfast, and often have lunch together. Beyond food, our interests range from books and mentoring to football, sailing, and climbing. There’s usually someone keen to share a recommendation, invite others along, or try something new together.

Diversity

Our lab brings together people from different countries, cultures, scientific backgrounds, ages, and stages of life. We value respect, inclusion, and a shared curiosity about behaviour, metabolism, and neuroscience.

Mental health

We want the lab to be a place where people can do thoughtful science and live well. As Carlos reminds us, “Don’t be too busy, if you are too busy you will not be creative.” We aim to speak honestly about challenges, support one another, and make room for life outside the lab.
